Travel.ru names the best in the industry
Russian tourists voted for their favorite destinations, hotels, resorts, airports, airlines and media.
Travel.ru, one of the most popular online resources for tourists in Russia, names its annual award winners. Annual ceremony took place in Moscow at MITT - Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition on March 17th, 2011. Many representatives of the counties, destinations and resorts arrived to Moscow to participate in Travel.ru Star award ceremony. Laureates agreed that Travel.ru Star award reflects preferences of Russian tourists. Participants unanimously marked that consumers' votes are the most objective method to choose the best in tourism industry and hospitality. Irina Turina, press attaché of Russian Union of Travel Industry: "There is no doubt that Travel.ru Star is notable for its impartiality and independence. Nor participants nor winners are paying for their participation and victory."
Among of the guests of this year’s ceremony were ambassadors and officials from winning countries. Simon Tensing de Cruz, the ambassador of Singapore in Russia, thanked Russian tourists for giving high marks to Singapore Changi Airport (Best Foreign Airport in 2010) and Singapore Airlines (Best Airline by Destination Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania). Victor G. Garcia III, the ambassador of Philippines in Russia, received three awards: Discovery of the Year (Philippines), Best Resort of Southeast Asia and Best Island Resort (Boracay). Alfredo Rogerio Pérez Bravo, the ambassador of Mexico in Russia who also participated in the event, said that Russian tourists were new but important to Mexico. Cancun was a debutant this year. However, it was recognized in two nominations at once: Best Resort of the Caribbean Sea and Best Resort of North and South Americas. Jurmala (Latvia) became Best Resort of the Baltic Sea for the eights year running. Maris Dzenitis, vice mayor of Jurmala, said that the recognition from Russian tourists was especially important as statistically Russians are the main visitors in Latvia's coast.
Another four awards from Russian tourists went to Spain. Tenerife won its recognition as Best Resort of the Europe's Atlantic Coast. Costa Dorada became Best Resort of the Mediterranean Sea, Western Part. Ibiza was chosen as Best Destination for Young People. Hotel Gran Palas in La Pineda was nominated for Best Beach Hotel in Spain.
Turkey became winner in three nominations. Kemer was recognized as Best Resort of the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern Part, Alanya was nominated for Best Family and Kids Destination, and Hotel Amara Dolce Vita (Kemer) was recognized as Best Turkey's Beach Hotel.
Two awards came to Croatia. Dubrovnik was nominated for Best Resort of the Mediterranean Sea, and Central Part and Dubrovnik Palace was elected as Best Croatia's Beach Hotel.
Another two awards this year wins Egypt. Russian tourists have chosen Sharm el-Sheikh as Best Resort of the Red Sea. Best Egypt's Beach Hotel in 2010 voted for The Savoy Sharm el-Sheikh. Among other best destinations were Austria (Best Winter Destination), Japan (Dream Country), and Rome (Best City for Sightseeing).
In "beach" nominations Jurmala (Latvia) wins Travel.ru Star award as Best Resort of the Baltic Sea, Maldives named Best Resort of the Indian Ocean, Middle East and Central Asia, Agadir (Morocco) was nominated for Best Resort of Africa (except of Egypt), and Bora Bora (French Polynesia) for Best Resort of Australia and Oceania. Among winners in hotel nominations are Admiral (Golden Sands, Bulgaria), Madinat Jumeirah (Dubai, UAE), Royal Cliff Beach Resort (Pattaya, Thailand), Aldemar Royal Mare (Crete, Greece), Four Seasons (Limassol, Cyprus),
Magic Life Manar Imperial (Hammamet, Tunisia), and The Leela Kempinski Goa (Goa, India).
In aviation industry Russian tourists nominated Aeroflot for Best Airline by Destination Russia and CIS, Emirates for Best Airline by Destination Middle East and Asia, South African Airways for Best Airline by Destination Continental Africa (except of Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco), Lufthansa for Best Airline by Destination Europe, Delta Air Lines for Best Airline by Destination North America, and LAN Airlines for Best Airline by Destination Central and South America. Domodedovo was nominated for Best Russian Airport.

Travel.ru Star is the first and unique consumer award in travel industry in Russia. Since 2003, the winners are selected by means of online voting. In 2010, Travel.ru Star awards were voted by over 9.000 online users who suggested 264 Russian tour operators, 203 beach hotel resorts, 320 beach destinations, 176 tourist places in 57 countries, 92 airlines, many Russian and foreign airports, dozens of travel guides, newspapers and magazines, thematic websites and TV channels. Every submission made online was immediately entered into the award competition free of charge.
